BLR velocities in optically and X - ray selected AGN samples

چکیده

We have analyzed optical spectra of 473 X-ray and 235 optically selected AGNs, to study their emission line properties. We present results of an analysis of the Hβ linewidths. We find that the linewidth distribution of quasars is shifted towards higher velocities (=4300 km s) compared to the distribution of Sy 1s (=3000 km s). There are no Narrow Line Quasars, i.e. there are no AGNs with quasar luminosities and FWHM(Hβ)<2000 km s . NLSy1s comprise 20–30% of the AGN population at faint absolute magnitudes (MB> −22), irrespective of the selection method. In the RASS sample we find Γ [0.1-2.4 keV] <3.3. The Γ vs. FWHM(Hβ) distribution for Sy 1 galaxies is consistent with previous work. For QSOs the spectral index also flattens with increasing FWHM(Hβ), but they have larger linewidths than Seyfert 1s.

Balmer Lines as Diagnostics of Physical Conditions in AGN Broad Emission Line Regions

Using a well known method for laboratory plasma diagnostic, the Boltzmann-plot, we discuss the physical properties in Broad Line Region (BLR) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). We apply the Boltzmann-plot method to Balmer lines on a sample of 14 AGN, finding that it may indicate the existence of " Case B " recombination or Partial Local Thermodynamical Equilibrium (PLTE). For BLR of AGN, where PL...

Why X-ray–selected Agn Appear Optically Dull

We investigate why half of X-ray–selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in deep surveys lack signs of accretion in their optical spectra. The majority of these “optically–dull” AGN are no more than ∼ 6 times fainter than their host galaxies in rest-frame R-band; as such, AGN lines are unlikely to be overwhelmed by stellar continuum in at least half the sample. We find that optically–dull AGN hav...

Differences in the Agn Populations of Groups and Clusters: Clues to Agn Evolution

We combine optical and X-ray data for eight low redshift (z ∼ 0.06) poor groups of galaxies from the XI (XMM/IMACS) Groups Project to study the AGN population in the group environment. Among ∼ 140 group members, we identify five AGN based on their optical emission lines. None of these optically-selected AGN are detected by XMM-Newton. One additional AGN is discovered in the XMM-Newton observati...

Clustering of X–ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei

A total of 235 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from two different soft X-ray surveys (the ROSAT Deep Survey –DRS– and the ROSAT International X-ray Optical Survey –RIXOS–) with redshifts between 0 and 3.5 are used to study the clustering of Xray selected AGN and its evolution. A 2 sigma significant detection of clustering of such objects is found on scales < 40 − 80 h Mpc in the RIXOS sample, whil...

WHY OPTICALLY–FAINT AGN ARE OPTICALLY–FAINT: THE Spitzer PERSPECTIVE

Optically–faint X-ray sources (those with fX/fR> 10) constitute about 20% of X-ray sources in deep surveys, and are potentially highly obscured and/or at high redshift. Their faint optical fluxes are generally beyond the reach of spectroscopy. For a sample of 20 optically–faint sources in CDFS, we compile 0.4–24 μm photometry, relying heavily on Spitzer. We estimate photometric redshifts for 17...
